Dutch-Turkish rapper Morda, 38, was sentenced on Tuesday in Turkey to four years and two months in prison for lyrics he was promoting the use of cannabis. His director informed the ANP news agency. The rapper appeals the verdict.
A resource of rap songs in Dutch, Turkish and English and is very popular. Some of his videos have garnered more than 200 million views on YouTube. A Turkish court is now punishing him for promoting cannabis in his songs and videos.
“Unfortunately, I’ve received bad news,” Morda, also known as Onder Dogan, announced to his audience. The rapper did not travel to Turkey for the cause, because he is busy recording an album in Holland.
A supplier was arrested at Istanbul airport last year. The rapper was briefly detained because an investigation was opened into his lyrics, which would have promoted cannabis use. The Turkish Prosecutor’s Office has demanded five to ten years’ imprisonment against him.

According to the rapper, these are songs that he wrote a long time ago. The songs released and reached millions of people. I played these songs to my fans at parties and my fans sang with all the words. We laughed and danced together to all these songs. These are songs that people who don’t speak Turkish also like. These people started to sing and rap on Turkish lyrics after listening to my music.”
The case gave the music a negative charge and the rapper did not understand that he had been punished. The judge thinks my daughter deserves to not see her father for four years and two months for some songs. The same goes for my family. I will never understand or agree with this. very sad.”
