FIFA President Infantino surprised: “Workers in Qatar gained dignity thanks to the World Cup” | World Cup 2022

Gianni Infantino was asked at a conference in Los Angeles if FIFA would help the families of deceased guest workers. He did not answer the question specifically, but basically emphasized the progress Qatar had already made.

“Let’s not forget that this is long-term hard work,” Infantino said of the situation in Qatar. “The United States is also a country of immigration. My parents also immigrated from Italy to Switzerland.”

Then Infantino went one step further. “If you give someone a job, even in difficult circumstances, you give him dignity and pride. And this is not charity.”

The FIFA president also stuck to his position, which he had previously stated, that only three people were killed in preparation for the World Cup. However, according to international research, it concerns 6,500 deaths.

“We are investigating outside organizations,” Infantino added. “Other workers may have died in other places, but FIFA is not responsible for everything that happens in the world. Thanks to FIFA and football, we have been able to improve the situation of 1.5 million workers in Qatar.”
