“Amazing, charming, really special… I can use a lot of superlatives,” a beaming Umi opened the interview. “Yes, this made sacrifices. Also for me. But that’s what you do all for him. For this great performance, for Remco. I take it for granted, it takes no effort whatsoever. Anyone can do this for love his life.”
For a moment, Umi had a very uncomfortable moment in Madrid. “After we had a delicious meal and a drink with all the ladies of the cyclists, we were not allowed to welcome our men into the finish area. In the absence of a pass. I found it very unfortunate. I myself had a déjà vu. It also happened to me at the time of the trial in Alicante , where a simple crushing barrier prevented him from seeing Remko and congratulating him on the first showFirst-ever victory in a Grand Tour. Then I felt that something was taken from me, for a moment I did not look like anyone. ”

“It feels the same now to other women, who would otherwise take care of their loved ones day and night,” Omi continues. There were even some who left their children at home to be here. It made me emotional. Finally someone else handed me over, so I could still kiss and hug Remco at the end. But they really had to convince me to do it on my own. Because we, the women, are a team too. And I don’t want to leave the rest.”
However, Umi had to admit that it was a magical moment. “A moment I wouldn’t have missed for the world. And there’s more to come. As Remko himself declared: We’re getting married this fall. I’m really looking forward to this stability in our lives, so that we’ll be able to relax, focus on his goals, and work together in peace. From tomorrow (today, editor) I will miss him again for a while. But we will survive. I think it is much more unfortunate for all the people on the home front, who sympathized with Rymko and that Belgium would not be able to celebrate a historic cycling event with him right away. We will definitely catch up on that. These people still owe us something.”
