Reinhardt Jansey van Rensburg and Carlos Barbero have not played for a team since the end of last year after employer Qhubeka announced they were pulling out of cycling. Now they have to bring some experience to Lotto-Soudal.
After a disappointing spring, Lotto-Soudal is in poor shape in the battle for a place in next season’s WorldTour. So the national lottery team had to step in.
“Like any team this year, we’ve had a lot of sickness,” CEO John Lilang explains. “As a result, we weren’t always able to start with a full squad. With Kamil Maliki and Jarrad Drezner we also have two long injuries. We had to strengthen ourselves so we could continue to complete our planned program.”
In Janse van Rensburg and Barbero Lelangue they found the perfect reinforcements. “They are experienced, race ready and excited. We will give them the chance until the end of the season and believe they will be a good fit for our team. They are very grateful for the opportunity they had with us and I am sure they will prove their worth for our young team.”
Reynardt Jansey van Rensburg won the South African Championship this year. Carlos Barbero has won three stages in Burgos in the past and was 12th at Ghent Wevilgem in 2019.
