Philip Gilbert will of course start in his “car” Liege-Bastogne-Liege in his final year as a cyclist. There is already talk on social media that at La Redoute “Phil” has been chalked to the road surface no less than 700 times. Lotto Soudal has now submitted a selection about the 2011 winner.
Along with Gilbert, Tim Wells, Harm Vanhoek, Victor Verchev and Sylvain Moniquet, four Belgians remain on the starting sheet on behalf of the Lotto team. The seven were completed by Danish ridge specialist Andreas Kron and British Matthew Holmes.
Last year, Tim Wellens was the best Lotto Soudal rider in the Liège-Bastogne-Liège score. He was then twenty-four. Last Wednesday, Wellens was also the top team in Walloon Arrow.
Update: Apr 23 at 10.50am
Dane Andreas Kron will not participate in Liège-Bastogne-Liège. The 23-year-old must be fit for the Belgian classic due to illness. “This is heartbreaking. All I can do now is get back to your health and then work towards achieving new goals,” the Lotto Soudal rider said on his Twitter. Kron has been replaced by 22-year-old Belgian Sebastien Grenard.
