Macro seeks protection against creditors, court agrees | interior

On Wednesday, the Antwerp company’s court approved Makro Cash & Carry Belgium’s request for protection from creditors. On September 1, the retail chain asked the court to initiate a judicial reorganization procedure by transferring businesses under jurisdiction (PGR).

The procedure makes it possible to transfer all or part of the activities. The chain’s board of directors wants to protect the company’s viable economic activities with this move.

In a press release on Wednesday, the company noted that several “serious parties” have spontaneously expressed interest in acquiring Metro and some Macro businesses or Macro Stores.

A judicial officer has now been appointed to manage the next steps for the transfer of activities.

Macro Cash & Carry Belgium has seventeen stores: eleven Metro wholesale food stores and six branches of the Macro supermarket chain. In total, about 2,000 people work there. The company, which had been struggling for years, was acquired in June by investor Bronze Real Estate.
