Michael Morkoff replaces Ilan Van Wilder in the Giro d’Italia for the Quick Step Alpha Vinyl Team. This seasoned knight declared in Danish podcast Forhjulsir† 37-year-old Morkøv will have to lead for necessary stage victories as enemy captain Mark Cavendish.
Mørkøv won’t finish the Giro by the way, he points out in the podcast. The Dane will complete the first thirteen stages of the Italian Tour as last man in sprint Mark Cavendish, before leaving the Giro. Mørkøv will also go to the Tour de France in the summer, where he will (probably) help Fabio Jacobsen in the sprint stages.
The fact that Cavendish can count on Mørkøv’s qualities to lead in the next Giro is a huge boost for the Briton. Cavendish and Murkoff have already completed three competitions together this year: the UAE Tour, the Minerva Classic Brugge-De Panne and Milan-Turin. In the UAE Tour, Mørkøv led the sprint leader to a victory on stage, and the two riders also found the winning formula in Milan and Turin.
After Milan-Torino won it, Cavendish offered some compliments to his Danish teammate. The British enemy bomber doesn’t just rely on Mørkøv in the upcoming Giro. Bert van Lerberge, David Ballerini, Joseph Cerny and Mauro Schmid are also part of the Sprint Sprint Adequate† Mauri Vansevenant and Andrea Bagioli complete Giro’s selection of Quick-Step-Alpha Vinyl.
