Free internet is provided to 48 million households in the United States. Twenty major Internet providers will provide high-speed Internet connections to low-income families.
The project is part of a project funded by the Infrastructure Act passed last year. The deal is expected to be officially announced by US President Joe Biden on Monday.
About 11.5 million households are already enrolled in the Affordable Affiliate Program. In total, about 48 million families are eligible for the program. Participants get a discount of up to $ 30 per month on their internet subscriptions, which means there is no cost to them.
Internet service providers, including major companies such as AT&T, Comcast and Verizon, have agreed to offer speeds of at least 100 megabits per second and will not charge extra.
Families are eligible for the program by meeting the income limit or if they have already participated in other federal assistance programs.
The 20 companies that signed up are part of more than 1,300 companies participating in the Affiliate Affiliate Program.
