Mercedes-Benz has to recall 1 million vehicles from around the world due to potential wear on the brake booster. It concerns cars of the ML, GL and R series, which were manufactured between 2004 and 2015.
In the worst case, brakes on this model series can fail completely due to wear, warns the US consumer watchdog NHTSA. Under certain conditions, wear can cause the brake booster to leak, reducing brake boost, Mercedes-Benz said. It is not known how many cars are used in Belgium.
More than 993,407 cars in total
According to the German brand, as a result, in rare cases, the operating forces on the brake pedal necessary to brake the car can increase, increasing the braking distance. This may be accompanied by a hissing or streaming noise when braking. In total, this concerns more than 993,407 cars. In Germany, there is a danger to the owners of about 70 thousand cars.
according to Documents related to the summons Submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the solution is not clear. First, dealers will check brake boosters on recalled vehicles for wear. If there is no rust formation, the vehicle can continue to drive normally. If wear is detected, additional testing will determine when the brake booster should be replaced.
There is no unequivocal solution to the problem
The document says only cars with light wear “can continue to drive for up to two years”. But eventually the brake boosters will be replaced anyway. Mercedes advises owners of affected models not to drive their vehicle again until an inspection has been carried out. According to Mercedes-Benz, no accidents have been reported so far as a result of possible wear.
