gink raceMark van Bommel is pictured as Antwerp’s new coach. The 45-year-old Dutchman is also a fan of Racing Genk, and is weighing his options.
Mark van Bommel is a wanted man. Not only did Racing Genk, but Antwerp recently reported to the former Dutch international. In fact, Director of Football Affairs Marc Overmars is said to have a two-year contract ready for him. The Great Old package looks attractive. Van Bommel will ensure the support of his compatriot at Bosuil, he will be able to sign a lucrative contract and end up at a club with prospects.
Van Bommel will succeed Brian Brisky. The Danish coach’s attitude seemed unacceptable for some time and only deteriorated after disappointing playoffs, in which no matches were won.
Van Bommel was released after being fired from Wolfsburg, Germany at the end of October. His football career was very successful. He played the 2010 World Cup Final and won trophies with Barcelona, Eindhoven, Milan and Bayern Munich, but his coaching career didn’t get off to the best start. Previously dismissed from PSV, for example, he also earned praise in Eindhoven for his contribution to the development of talents such as Donyell Malen and Mohamed Ihattaren. It makes players better, something Overmars knows very well.
However, nothing has been decided yet, because Jenk has her trump cards as well. The Limburgers want to start a new chapter next season and enjoy a good reputation abroad because of the past. Furthermore, Genk is close to Maastricht, where Van Bommel lives at home and his son plays football. Van Bommel visited the competition match against Charleroi last Tuesday.
But Van Bommel is certainly not the only candidate in Genk. Wouter Franken is still in the running to succeed Bernd Stork. KV Mechelen officially announced the imminent departure of Limburger, a former racing player, last weekend. It’s still contracted. The condition for his escalation is 600 thousand euros. A potential hitch for Genk, although KV Mechelen would be willing to negotiate. Additionally, Besnik Hassi is associated with his former club Genk as usual in the fairways.
