A third person was arrested in New Delhi on Sunday after at least 27 people were killed in a major building fire in the city. He is the owner of the building.
Two others were arrested on Saturday. It is suspected that they did not follow the safety rules.
The fire broke out late Friday afternoon in a four-storey commercial building in western New Delhi. Approximately 60 to 70 people were rescued from the building, but 27 people were killed. 12 were also wounded.
Of the 27 people who died in the fire, only eight were identified because the bodies were burned beyond recognition. Attempts are made to identify other victims through a forensic investigation.
Accidents and fires are very common in India where safety standards are not always respected. Poor fire protection facilities, missing emergency exits and outdated electrical systems are often the causes of tragedies.
