TelevisionThe 70 permanent employees in charge of “The House” don’t have to fear for their jobs, but the mystery remains for dozens of freelancers. This is what Flemish Information Minister Benjamin Dahl (CD&V) said in the Flemish Parliament.
Representatives of “Thuis” also supported the strike at the VRT at the end of May:
The VRT transformation plan was discussed there. One component of this proposal is to outsource “Thuis,” the only fictional series still made in-house, to an outside production house. This switch leads to uncertainty and turbulence.
VRT does not want to give specific names, but in “Thuis” some TV faces are employed permanently, while others have the status of freelancers. Thus, it appears that the latter category no longer has job security. The minister said, “70 VRT employees who work primarily in the ‘home’ will be protected when they are transferred to their new employer. They maintain equal working conditions. But I can’t say anything about the roughly equal number of freelance translators yet.”
The Minister also could not answer the question what the external production company “Thuis” would produce from now on and under what conditions. “VRT has informed me that discussions are underway with a number of production houses that can meet the requirements necessary to ensure and enhance the continuity of ‘Thuis’ as a quality Flemish chain.”
