To the editor:
By way of introduction, I am a retired assistant director with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and I have known Jay Brooks since shortly after he started his law enforcement career in the late ’80s. I remember Jay as a DARE officer and later through his accomplishments and promotional process. I knew then that with his work ethic, he was going places. I was so pleased when he decided to run for sheriff and know he will do a great job for the county.
Jay has never run from tough issues and has been tenacious in his efforts to rid the area of drugs and other crimes. He and I worked drugs in the early years of his career, when I was the narcotics supervisor for SLED and I was always pleased with the great job he did. He always approached the investigations the same way regardless of the social status of the offender and regardless of the budget constraints at the time. I see Jay as a fair-minded person who demands professionalism of himself and his staff. During his tenure as chief of police for Cheraw, he has done all of the right things and I think Jay Brooks does an excellent job.
If I lived in Chesterfield County, I would vote for Jay Brooks as sheriff, but since I do not live there, I wanted everyone to know how I feel. I have friends in Chesterfield County and the surrounding area and I hope you feel as I do and support the election of Jay Brooks for sheriff. He has always done a great job and is a true professional and friend, but his work is not completed yet.
Please vote for Jay Brooks for sheriff on June 10.
Steven A. Smith
Assistant director, SLED (Retired)
