ROCKINGHAM, N.C. — A tractor-trailer hauling recycled materials flipped onto its side Monday evening on U.S. 1 South, blocking traffic in both directions near the South Carolina state line.Robert Rice, and independent trucker from Florence, South Carolina, said he was uninjured in the wreck and signed a waiver declining to be taken to a hospital. He said he was lucky to be up walking around as he pressed the call button on his iPhone.“I’m trying to call my family right now,” Rice said. “Sometimes I get a signal out here, and sometimes I don’t.”Rice said he’s been driving for 16 or 17 years, and instructors don’t train you for this kind of thing in truck driving school.

Sales tax hike a rotten idea

To the editor:A few years ago, the Chesterfield County Council along with the towns of Cheraw and Chesterfield decided that we should build a spec building to attract business to the county. Now, the county council has spent another $75,000 to enact a plan to extract even more of our hard-earned dollars in the form of a 1 percent sales tax increase. Never mind that this will make ours th...

Greenville a South Carolina success story

Let me begin with full disclosure: I was born in Greenville and even though my family moved away when I was 5 years old, I still consider Greenville my hometown. And, as with a first love, one’s hometown will always be something special. So it is with me and Greenville. The Greenville of my childhood in the ‘50s is a very different place than Greenville today. My father was the minister at the Second Presbyterian Church and my earliest memories of both truancy and explor...
