BENNETTSVILLE — Mary Dupree Talley, 92, died Aug. 7, 2012.

A funeral service was held Aug. 13 at Sawmill Baptist Church.

Talley was born Nov. 10, 1919, in Marlboro County, S.C., to Sallie Dupree and Willie Bass. She attended Coulter Academy in Cheraw, S.C., where she met and later married the late Conrad Talley. They had one daughter, the late Margaret Talley Byrd who was married to the late Wilson L. Byrd Sr.

Talley leaves behind one sister, Bernice “Boots” Dupree Smalls and brother Silas “Teeny” William Dupree (and Elena) both of New York and brother Willie Bass of Alabama. She also will be missed by her three grandchildren; Levi Talley Byrd (Lucia) of Florence, S.C.; Wilson Loving Byrd Jr. of Warrenton, Va.; and Cynthia Byrd Turner of Lithonia, Ga. She was also great grandmother of Charles R. And Christopher A. Turner and Wilson L. Byrd, III. She had two great great grandchildren, Xiomira and Isaiah Byrd. She had many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors.

Talley lived and worked many years in New York before moving back to Bennettsville in the late seventies to care for her ailing mother.

She was a happy, outgoing person involved with the church. She was proud of being a member of Sawmill Baptist Church where she enjoyed serving on the Missionary Board.

Civil Rights and voting were also important to her. She often spoke of having once met the Reverend Jessie Jackson during her work in Civil Rights. She worked hard on voter registration, being presented the Harriet Award for the number of new voters she signed up.

Morris Funeral Cottage in Cheraw, S.C., served the family.
