Mathieu van der Poel and Wout van Aert have met each other since childhood. There is no friendship, but of course appreciation for each other.

Van Aert and Van der Poel are not friends because of their rivalry, but there is respect. “Wout is more of a competitor than a friend, but we always respect each other. It's also a good way to establish a relationship with each other,” Van der Poel recently said on Geraint Thomas' podcast.
“It would be strange to be friends with this person, but maybe it's something for after our careers. Right now we're just competitors and we respect each other a lot,” the Dutchman added.
Dinner at hubby's
They showed again in Baal that Van Aart and Van der Poel actually get along. While exploring, the two ran into each other, after which a few words were exchanged.
Van Aart then continues to warm up, while Van der Poel lags behind for a while. But that moment proves once again that there is indeed mutual respect.
