Bahrain-Victorious Double: Matej Mohorek wins the final…

It was very difficult from the start. In the first hour, the riders clocked an average of nearly 51 km/h. Because of such a high pace, it was not possible to immediately form a leading group. After 60 km there is still an escape. Eleven passengers, including Philip Gilbert, Dries Devenins and Tosh van de Sande, took their chance. But this progress has never been much.

Because of this small advance, some riders were able to jump to the front in the second lane on the wall. It was Kasper Asgren’s strong drive that drove a group that included Campinerts, McNulty and Mohoric to the front of the race. Nobody can follow from the original leading group. With 50 km remaining, three of the top ten ratings riders rode the newly formed Leading Group. But this progress did not grow more than a minute. 30 km from the finish, it was McNulty who surrendered first, during the last pass on the wall the other three were also caught. With 25 km remaining, everything had to be rebuilt.

But Matej Muhoric, second in the standings, still had some spare in the tank and took off again on the descent. Bosberg started by ten seconds on a chase set of three. Captain Sonny Colbrelli, unwilling to risk letting Mohoric overtake, joins Kasper Asgreen and Tim Wellens in pursuit of it. However, things went so quickly for Wellens that he was forced to release him and join a group with some of the big names like Sagan, Campenaerts, Benoot and Stuyven. They followed within half a minute of the leader. Ten kilometers before the end, Asgreen and Colbrelli were caught by this stalking group.

Muhoric’s stage win was no longer in danger, and the only question was whether he could also take the final win. So he had to finish the match 35 seconds ahead of Colberelli. But thanks to the late retirement by Tom Dumoulin, to which Colberelli reacted well, the Italian’s overall win is no longer in jeopardy.
