Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered state gas company Gazprom to supply more natural gas to Germany and Austria in November. In this way he wants to alleviate the energy crisis in Europe.
The TASS news agency reported that the increase in gas supplies may only occur once Russia’s underground gas reservoirs are refilled. According to Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller, his company could start supplying more gas to Europe from November 8.
Putin has been reluctant to continue supplying gas to Europe in recent weeks. He also indicated that the deliveries that were delivered exceeded the quantities agreed contractually.
According to observers, Russia has used the refusal of additional gas supplies to alleviate the energy crisis in Europe as a lever to force the rapid operation of the new Nord Stream 2 pipeline to Germany, the procedures for allowing it are still underway. The Kremlin denies this.
In Russian state media, Putin is being celebrated as the savior of Europe for his decision to save more gas.
