The March 23 rebels have shot down a helicopter belonging to the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the eastern Congo. The Congolese army said in a statement today that the plane was carrying at least eight people.
The UN mission, known as MONUSCO, reported earlier today that contact with the helicopter had been lost in an area where the rebels are currently launching an offensive.
The M23 group, which was expelled from the Congo after the uprising in 2012 and 2013, yesterday attacked two army positions near the borders with Uganda and Rwanda. The fighting continues today.
The Congolese army said in a statement that the UN helicopter was shot down in an area controlled by the rebels while it was on a mission to monitor the movements of the civilian population. The military is currently searching for the helicopter and any survivors.
At least 27 were killed in an attack by a rebel group in the Congolese Alliance of Democratic Forces
