Keith Skembri, chief of staff of former Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, was charged on Saturday with money laundering, corruption and fraud. A total of eleven people and twenty companies are being prosecuted for this. According to the Maltese media, Shembri told the court he was not guilty.
The former chief executive is said to have paid 650,000 euros before a businessman Times of Malta Possession.
The deal was revealed by intelligence journalist Daphne Caruana Galicia, who was killed in a car bombing in 2017. He declared widespread corruption in the circles around Muscat, which was supposed to end after the assassination last year.
Jorgen Fenek, who is said to be the mastermind behind the assassination, resigned as Muscat’s commander-in-chief a few months ago after naming himself. This businessman friend, who received gifts from him, is still awaiting trial. One of the three perpetrators involved in the attack pleaded guilty last month and was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Shembri was already arrested last year in connection with an investigation into the sale of passports to wealthy foreigners, which was also written by Caruana Galicia.
