If you thought those white paints on your walls were the whitest possible, you were wrong. This new, ultra-white paint was developed by scientists at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, USA. This coating reflects at least 98.1 percent of sunlight. This paint immediately gives a place in the Guinness Book of Records, which is described as the whitest color of all time.

That this white paint reflects sunlight is nothing new. But to what extent does that happen? Plain white paint reflects up to 80 to 90 percent of sunlight. So a big difference. The coating makes the surface cooler than the surroundings, in this way it can replace the air conditioner. To achieve this, inventors are currently commercially making this ultra-white paint. The patent has already been applied for.

To obtain white paint, inventors use a high percentage of barium sulfate. This is a compound often used in cosmetics and photo papers. A variety of these particles are used, scattering the light spectrum. This way it can reflect more sunlight.
