After the pilot project in Hof On the Antwerp-Mechelen bike route, a test area is also being set up in Mortsel for added safety. Amadeus Stockmanslei will become a bike street for six months from the beginning of November.

With this intervention, the city of Morzel and the province of Antwerp want to eliminate the bottleneck on the bicycle highway. “We can finally give the more than five thousand cyclists who ride daily in Amadeus Stockmanslei the space they deserve. The current bike highway here is too narrow for the number of cyclists. This leads to many unpleasant and unsafe situations every day,” says Ships Navigation Affiliated with Mortsel Steve D’Hulster (Vooruit-I Love Mortsel).

Reverse driving

Cyclists in the direction of Antwerp may use the full width of the road, while cyclists in the direction of Mechelen will be given the current cycle path. In order to prevent cyclists from coming into conflict with De Lijn’s cars and buses, the direction of travel at Amadeus Stockmanslei will be reversed. As a result, regular buses will loop along Ter Varenstraat and Osylei.

The various intersections with the street are also indicated for cyclists. Red signs in particular will direct cyclists and alert motorists to the presence of the bike path. These include the intersection with the Deurnestraat and the Dieseghemlei crossing.

The infrastructure for the six-month pilot project will be put in place in the coming weeks. During this period, the city and county will draw the influences to the bike highway and neighborhood. Adjustments to the final design can still be made with the information collected.
