Guy's Hospital in London has apologized to more than 100 women after their eggs and embryos were damaged during a freezing process at the hospital. The BBC reported this.
The clinic contacted the 136 women after discovering that some bottles containing a faulty freezing solution may have been used in error in September and October 2022. There is a possibility that the cells are still in good condition, but this possibility is small.
A large number of the women involved are cancer patients who had their eggs frozen at Guy's Hospital before cancer treatment, with the hope that they would be able to have children after treatment via IVF or other treatment as this would not be possible naturally.
Safety Instructions
The Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority (HFEA), the authority responsible for the matter, is investigating the matter. It said it sent a safety alert about the incorrect fix to all registered clinics in February 2023. But that was months after the wrong solution was used at Guy's Hospital.
Meanwhile, the HFEA reported Wednesday afternoon that a second fertility center may have been using a defective solution. Jessop Fertility, based in Sheffield, has been named as the second clinic involved in the incident.
