The newspaper reported that the hurricane hit the city southwest of the capital, Des Moines, in the late afternoon, causing extensive damage.

Severe storms have left more than 10,000 people in Des Moines without power.
According to the US Weather Service, the hurricane had winds of up to 233 miles per hour and was “extremely dangerous.”
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has declared a natural disaster in Madison County, which is located downtown. “Our thoughts are with all those affected by the deadly storms that ravaged our state today,” she said in a statement.
And in December, 79 more people were killed in several violent tornadoes in five central US states. Kentucky was particularly affected at the time.
