At least ten dead after attack on deminers in Afghanistan outside the country

At least ten people were killed in an attack on a group of deminers in Afghanistan. The Interior Ministry said 14 others were injured.

The ministry said that a demining camp in Baghlan Merkasi district of northern Baghlan province was attacked late Tuesday night. No one has claimed responsibility yet, but according to the ministry, the Taliban were behind the attack.

Local media reported that it was a demining camp for the internationally active Halo Trust. According to the NGO’s website, 2,600 people work for the Halo Trust in Afghanistan. The program in the country is run entirely by Afghans.

Aid projects and NGOs have been attacked several times in Afghanistan in the past. In 2020, according to the NGO Inso, there were 180 incidents involving NGOs in the country. 14 employees were killed, 27 were injured, and 42 were kidnapped.
