CD&V President Sami Mahdi wants an extinction scenario for low-emission zones | local

Today, Mehdi participated in a debate at the Automotive eMotion Summit in Skyhall, the former departure hall of Brussels Airport. If the low-emission zones (LEZ) target is met, they could disappear for the CD&V chief, he said.

Antwerp and Ghent are the only Flemish cities with a low emission zone. Brussels also has one in the city centre. According to Mahdi, these areas are useful in reducing the amount of air pollution. But diesel cars with the Euro 5 emission standard, and certainly the latest Euro 6(d) models, are said to not cause air pollution anymore.

That is why CD&V is considering a scenario of phasing out designated economic zones when the air quality in urban areas, or the share of cars in them, improves. With the increasing decline in emissions of new diesel cars and the emergence of electric cars that have no negative impact on air quality, this appears to be the case. According to the party, the problem of urban air quality will solve itself within a few years.

Moreover, the party does not want to hit owners of diesel cars that are disproportionately more polluting compared to owners of electric commercial vehicles within a few years.
