Notable events occur, such as two sea lions recently giving birth on a golf course, another accidentally entering a surfing competition and swimming past a competitor, and some animals trying to cross the road.
Sea lions, which can migrate miles inland, end up in parks and on busy highways, causing quite a stir. Jim Fyfe, a biodiversity officer at New Zealand's Ministry of Environmental Conservation, told The Guardian they “didn't want to make a fuss”, although this sometimes happens. A golfer recently reported that a mother sea lion and her pup were disrupting play on the golf course.
It is nothing new for animals to mingle with residents: in recent years they have also disrupted football matches, stolen shoes, and joined people on outings. Although it is not aggressive, it is currently causing more problems than usual. According to Fife, park rangers have recorded “several issues with sea lions coming across the roads” this year. This is because male sea lions, who normally return to the Auckland Islands, are now staying on the mainland to breed, driving the females inland.
New Zealand sea lions are one of the rarest species in the world, and 11 of 25 expected pups have been born in Dunedin this summer. Despite the inconvenience, residents reportedly fell in love with these unusual visitors.
