In fact, former international striker Andy Carroll. He was introduced to Blue and Black, who invited him to Belfius Basecamp yesterday for auditions. Carroll was fully examined: physically, medically and mentally. However, there is still no indication that a contract exists. First, a decision needs to be made today as to whether there will be a trial period, and last night the chance seemed very slim. Carroll in and of itself is an opportunity because he is free of transfers. And he has a unique profile anyway: the 1m 93rd striker has been considered one of the best headers in the Premier League for years. But Carol’s career is in a slump. It was in the 2009-10 season with Newcastle, who were still in the second tier, that broke.
After one year in the Premier League, he was transferred by Liverpool, who paid him no less than 40 million euros. He became an international with England, and played in the 2012 European Championship, but then withdrew. At West Ham, Carroll had good moments, but due to injuries he is more and more out of the picture. Last season he was in the second division at Reading and West Bromwich Albion, but he did not receive a new contract there. Now in Club Brugge, was the question? He wasn’t hoping for much, and rightfully so. Blauw-Zwart eventually decided not to give Carol a trial period.
Aphobe is coming
It looks like 29-year-old Afobe is on his way again. The striker was trained at Arsenal’s academy which sold him to Wolverhampton after several loan spells in 2015. There Afobe scored 21 goals in 46 appearances, after which Premier League club Bournemouth put in at least 13.3 million euros for the striker. Things went a little less smoothly at England’s top level, where he scored ten goals in two seasons. However, Stoke City thought it was still worth €13.5 million in winter 2019.
But in recent seasons it has been difficult to make loans to Bristol City, Trabzonspor and Millwall. In the latter club, Afobe took first place with 12 goals in 38 matches in the tournament.
