WillbrookOn Saturday, Europaplein in Willebroek was the starting signal for “Lots of Opportunity and Ways of Opportunity,” a project about the future of the arena and the open space of tomorrow.
Earlier this year, the municipality decided to leave Europaplein undeveloped. “We provide a liveable neighborhood with green spaces for play and neighborhood, enhance social connectivity by creating meeting space, beautify important cycling and walking connections and create more space for nature development, biodiversity and climate solutions,” Nature Board Member Thierry Serrien sums up the benefits.
However, keeping the space open is not straightforward. “The current permit policy allows all construction plots in villages to be used for new construction and development,” says Wim Debein, project coordinator for Lands and Opportunities Paths. “As a result, it is often difficult to translate a municipality’s green policy vision to the plot level.”
“This is a shame, because many building plots have a great value for open space in terms of nature development and quality of life. With this project, Regional Landscape Rivierenland wants to investigate how to combat ‘excessive consumption of open space’ and how this space can be arranged differently.”
At Saturday’s meeting, residents were able to express their thoughts and concerns about the future park. For those who were unable to attend, dashboards with statements about the future vision of Europaplein will also be placed.
