Everyone who applies for citizenship in a German state must recognize Israel’s right to exist in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict

Anyone applying for citizenship in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt must now express support for Israel’s right to exist. The Ministry of the Interior of the eastern state determined this in November by decree of local authorities. This was stated by the state’s interior minister, Tamara Zieschang, on Tuesday in Magdeburg.

The decree, which was seen by the German news agency DPA, stipulates that the right to exist the State of Israel is the reason for Germany’s existence. She said, “Obtaining German citizenship requires conviction of Israel’s right to exist.” Applicants must therefore immediately confirm in writing before obtaining citizenship that “they recognize Israel’s right to exist and condemn all efforts directed against the existence of the State of Israel.”

Check for “anti-Semitic attitudes”

In the case of naturalization, attention should be paid to “whether there are indications of anti-Semitic attitudes,” Zichang said. The letter to local authorities states that naturalization is excluded if foreigners continue activities against the fundamental liberal democratic order as outlined in the German constitution, including anti-Semitic crimes or denial of Israel’s right to exist.

Anyone who refuses to provide the statement will not receive a naturalization certificate. This must be noted in the file.
