Floods due to continuing rains in the Netherlands: Streets and theme parks are flooded, and Christmas activities have been cancelled outside

Heavy rains caused major flooding in various places in the Netherlands. A holiday park and restaurant in Kaatsheuvel in Brabant were flooded, and several streets in Achterhoek were closed. River water may rise further in the Netherlands in the coming days. That is why Code Orange has already been announced in part of the Netherlands.

Water is high in different places of the country. For example, a new residential area in Eindhoven is at risk of flooding due to heavy rainfall. In Drenthe, fields were flooded, and the Hart van Drenthe Nature Reserve became difficult to cross in some places due to rising water levels, reports said. RTV Drenthe.

In addition, the Neers River in northern Limburg will reach its highest discharge level ever measured, at 28 cubic meters per second. There is a rise in water levels, especially in the north of the Southern Governorate, but this does not lead to major problems anywhere. Despite the rain in recent hours, the situation did not deteriorate.

Underwater holiday park

The Ruhenbergerbeek in Losser has been flooded. Five streets in the area are closed with gates. To our knowledge, no homes have been evacuated in this sparsely populated area. The fire brigade is busy pumping water. As in the De Zandleij amusement park in Cromvoirt in Brabant. The surrounding meadows are also heavily flooded, ensuring that water continues to flow into the garden.

A trench has now been dug next to a large convoy to remove the water. The convoy passenger is not present. And his neighbor across the street wasn't there on Christmas morning. “I can see that the water here was a few centimeters high against our wall,” she said after returning home.

Christmas lunch has been cancelled

On Christmas Day this year, major flooding also occurred in Kaatsheuvel and part of the Europarks at Kaatsheuvel. The large café and indoor playground were flooded. The fire brigade, the municipality and many employees are working hard to remove the water. The damage is widespread. The Christmas brunch that was supposed to take place at the Grand Café was cancelled.

Steve Block, owner of Het Wapen, thought it wasn't too bad Monday morning and went to wipe down and pump himself. But he soon realized that there was more to it than that. “Then I called the fire brigade and the municipality, because it was clear that rainwater was not the cause of the floods.” The cause of the misery lies in an electrical box across the road, which contains pumps that keep discharging the sewage, so to speak. “One of the stages failed there, causing the pump to stop working. In no time there was maybe half a meter of water in the store. Everywhere.”

However, at the end of the afternoon, owner Steef Blok still had good news for the six hundred guests who would be having Christmas dinner there in the evening: Het Wapen van Kaatsheuvel was open again as usual from 5 p.m. Thank you for the efforts of the firefighters.

More water is on the way

Clearly, the high tide is not over yet. Due to heavy rain falling in our country and Germany and a lot of snow melting in Switzerland, the water levels in Dutch rivers are rising.

Rijkswaterstaat has announced the code orange for the IJsselmeer region. “The IJssel discharge is currently around 970 cubic meters per second. This will rise further in the coming days to around 1,250 cubic meters per second on December 29. Significant amounts of water are also being supplied to the IJsselmeer region from regional areas and reclaimed lands,” the Rijkswaterstadt said.

The IJssel in Deventer is expected to be flooded again for the first time since 2011. The municipality has already started implementing the emergency plan and will close Welle Street as of Wednesday morning. The barrier should ensure that city dwellers keep their feet dry.
