Former Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz has been given an eight-month suspended prison sentence for making false statements. The court in Vienna ruled that Kurz exercised greater influence over the appointment of officials at the state holding company ÖBAG than he admitted to the investigative committee.
Kurz had indicated in June 2020 that he had been informed of the appointments, but had not intervened effectively. Before he appointed his confidant Thomas Schmid as CEO, the game would have been fair.
Kurz, who always denied the accusations, was forced to resign in 2021 after charges in another case. The former leader of the conservative ÖVP party is said to have used taxpayers' money to falsify published opinion polls. The investigation into this case is still ongoing.
