Does the weather forecast predict severe storms? Then keep an eye on the RMI app, because from now on RMI will send a warning at the municipal level about ten minutes to one hour earlier. Will the wind start blowing strongly in your garden in half an hour? Then you'll get a notification, says meteorologist David Dehenau.
Since 2020, the RMI has been sending “weather flashes”, which are notifications via the RMI smartphone app that report ten minutes to a maximum of one hour in advance of the arrival of heavy rain showers or winter precipitation, whether combined or not. With thunder or hail, which may cause disturbance or inconvenience, and this is at the municipal level. “After years of research, the important element of wind during rainfall is now being added to weather flashes,” RMI said in a press release.
The closer in advance, the more accurately the weather can be predicted, according to RMI. “Weather phenomena such as extreme rainfall or wind gusts can only be predicted with sufficient reliability at a very local scale,” she says. Citizens can register for warning notifications at the municipal level via the free KMI app.
These weather flashes are short text messages that include the start time and a description of the expected weather hazards. They are generated via Intelligent Nowcasting technology, a system through which a large number of observations from Belgian weather radars and the BELLS lightning detection system are converted into very short-range municipal forecasts every 10 minutes.
