Last night, the Video Game Academy Awards were once again held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, as is the annual tradition. Many popular games, including Spider-Man 2, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder, competed for the prestigious grand prize of ‘Game of the Year’, but in the end it was Baldur’s Gate 3, a Belgian-made game, that won the award.
“We were hoping to win something, but it’s true Out of this world“, Jan Swillins, head of Larian Studio, reacts surprisingly to the win. In addition to the GOTY title, the studio won no less than five other awards. It also took home awards for Best Performer (Neil Newbon), Best Community Support. Best Role Playing and Best Multiplayer game and player voting.
In addition to Baldur’s Gate 3, several other games have also won awards. For example, Alan Wake II, a survival horror game from developer Remedy Entertainment, took home no fewer than three awards, including Best Novel, Best Game Direction, and Best Art Direction.
Other notable winners include Cyberpunk 2077 (Best Running Game), Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon (Best Action Game), The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (Best Action/Adventure Game), and Super Mario Bros. Wonder (Best Family Game) and Forza Motorsport (Best Accessibility Innovation and Best Sports/Racing Game).
