U.S. milk production fell in October compared to the same period last year. This means that a downward trend that was briefly interrupted in September is back. Milk production also declined slightly in New Zealand.
U.S. dairy farmers in the top 24 states produced 8.1 million tons last month. This is down 0.4% compared to the same month in 2022. The downward trend was briefly broken in September. There was also a decline in July and August. As the number of dairy cows in the U.S. declines, milk prices have started to rise again recently.
When we zoom in on the major milk producing states, it is noticeable that California produces the least amount of milk. In Texas, production has actually increased significantly. In Wisconsin, supply is down slightly.
New Zealand
New Zealand milked 2.4 million tonnes in September, down 0.4% compared to the same month in 2022. Due to the El Niño weather phenomenon, milk supplies in New Zealand are lower than last year, according to dairy cooperative Fonterra Ann. But milk production is decreasing compared to August. Seasonal milk peak is just around the corner.
