In Racing Genk are sticking to their position: the match against Anderlecht should be replayed. “We hope at least for legal clarity,” says chairman Peter Cronin from a winter training session in Benidorm, Spain. Coach Wouter Franken feels helpless, but no longer wants to put his energy into it: “But they missed an opportunity to send a signal.”

As is well known, Racing Genk do not accept the ruling of the Professional Refereeing Department (PRD), which rejected the much-discussed penalty kick farce against Anderlecht, as a human error meaning the match will not be replayed. “The referees’ statements were substantiated on the basis of all the evidence,” Cronin says. “I don't think it makes sense for referees to come to their own conclusions about what that means legally.”
According to Genk, it is not possible for the PRD as an interested party to issue a final ruling on the club's complaint. “It's natural for them to take a stand,” Cronin says. “Their position is that it is human error. We take note of this, but legally there are still some issues to be addressed by an objective body. We are going one step further.”

It is not clear to Genk exactly what authority he should take legal action with. It receives mixed signals from Brussels. “Even that's not clear, no,” Cronin continues. “We have been referred to the BAS (Belgian Court of Arbitration for Sport, ed.). We want to make sure that if we go to the BAS, they will not immediately refer us to the disciplinary board. We are looking into that. It is a legal matter and will be resolved quickly. Genk coach Wouter Franken also spoke about the problem again in Benidorm: “I find it strange, but I try not to put my energy into it anymore.
