Quinn Waters and Chris van der Steen won stage five of the Africa Eco Race on Saturday afternoon. Waters was 2:46 faster than Hungary's Varga Emery after the 405 km stage. For Quinn Waters, this is his first ever victory in a desert rally. “We could have won yesterday, but we weren't lucky, so it's great we won today,” Waters said with a smile.

Quinn and Chris did well for several days in their Toyota Hilux. Yesterday they were close to winning, but today they really won. “It's my first ever victory in a desert rally. I'm very happy for both of us. We didn't know each other, it was a search, we had to get to know each other. But our cooperation is getting better and better every day,” said the winners of the day.

Sunday is a rest day and Koen Wauters returns home, as previously announced, for a concert series by De Vrienden van Amstel. Clouzot will perform fourteen shows at the sold-out Ahoy Theater in Rotterdam. “It was agreed in advance. But if we had continued, we could have achieved great results. “Quinn and Chris, that's a good combination!” Quinn Waters laughs.

Wauters has a long history in motorsport. In 1992 he made his debut with a car for Albert Wandershot at the 24 Hours of Zolder. Four years later, he rode his first Dakar as Jackie Le Mans' co-pilot. The duo then finished twenty-seventh in Albert Wandershot's Toyota. One year later, Waters got behind the wheel of a Toyota himself and finished 63rd with Mark van Buijnbrouck as co-driver.

Between 1996 and 2012, Waters competed in the Dakar twelve times. In 2022 he participated in the Dakar Classic. Quinn Waters is one of the few Belgians to have participated in the Dakar on four continents: Europe, Africa, South America and Asia.

Because the Dakar has recently become part of the World Championship and the FIA sets the regulations, there is less room for amateurs. When Waters and Ferrin's cars were rejected before the start last year, the team decided not to participate in the Dakar for the time being and take a different approach. They chose the Africa Eco Race where amateurs have a place.

The 15th edition of the Africa Eco Race kicked off on Sunday 31 December. Participants will drive approximately 6,000 kilometers across Africa and end in Dakar on January 14.
