Dirk Ramakers said that the vaccination campaign in our country is beginning to saturate. This is certainly the case in Flanders, and Wallonia is also doing well. Additional steps are being taken in Brussels to intensify the campaign. We support this as much as possible from the staff. Also in Brussels, we are maintaining the vaccination target of 70 per cent.
The speed of vaccination no longer coincides with the speed of delivery, but with the number of people who still want a vaccine. “Since July, the desire to vaccinate has been crucial,” it seemed.
Developing countries
Currently, only new shipments from Pfizer/BioNTech are arriving, Rammakers said. In July we stopped giving the first doses of AstraZeneca. The European contract has expired and has not been extended. So the relationship with AstraZeneca was not clear. Only a few promised deliveries came to fruition.
Johnson & Johnson’s deliveries to our country have also been halted due to the maximum use of this vaccine for the COVAX program in developing countries. “Our country regulates the distribution of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine,” Ramakers explained.
Belgium still has potions in stock from J&J as well as from Moderna, which are being delivered temporarily “pending” to focus on COVAX. We are considering a third dose. We’re not worried that we’ll have very few doses at that time.
