PropertyThe job description of Queen Elizabeth (96) has been slightly changed by the palace. The number of official duties she “must perform” as the Queen has been cut back, while her successor, Prince Charles, 73, is doing more. The Sunday Telegraph reports on the basis of the annual report of the British royal family released last week.
The list of tasks Elizabeth always had to do included opening the Parliamentary year, appointing the Prime Minister, and making and receiving state visits. The updated version now only states that the Queen’s role “includes a range of parliamentary and diplomatic duties” and that she “receives” only visiting heads of state.
Charles actually opened the Parliamentary year on his mother’s behalf in May and then also gave the Throne Address. It was the first time in 59 years that the 96-year-old Queen was absent. The Prince of Wales also makes all foreign visits. Elizabeth, who has struggled with health issues in recent months, is expected to stop traveling.
A source inside the palace confirmed to The Telegraph that there had already been a “slight update” to the Queen’s job description, but it was not a “drastic” change. It will be the first time in more than a decade that the duties of the Queen have been modified.
