CyclingWarren Bargell (30) won the fifth stage of the Tirreno-Adriatico Championship. The Frenchman from Arkéa-Samsic had a better early break in a tough final. On the steep walls, Remco Evenepoel tried to put Tadej Pogacar on the line, but a poorly observed signalman threw a wrench in the works.
“Taba dei More” is an annual phenomenon in the Tirreno-Adriatico. The stage is dotted with many walls, although the peloton was given a lighter version earlier this year. In the leader’s blue jersey as the man to beat, Tadej Pogacar left for Remco Evenepoel and Jonas Vingegaard to test the Slovenian – or at least make an attempt.
The center of gravity of the stage was in the last 30 kilometres, but the first race hour was also a real crazy ride. Countless attempts to attack were thwarted, leaving the average speed of 44.8 km / h after an hour. In the end, dozens of riders managed to escape. One Belgian: Xandro Meurisse. The Twelve Braves were collected by a maximum of 4 minutes difference. In the pack, the responsibility lies with the forces of Tadej Pogakar.
Maurice and his comrades sang it for a long time and seemed to be able to dream of a stage victory, but then Remko Evenbeuil accelerated against one of the steep walls. The only ones who could follow were Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard. The three immediately found each other and quickly approached the head of the race. Until a non-committed sign man decides otherwise. Evenepoel missed a turn and took Pogacar and Vingegaard, whereupon the peloton passed them all over again.
In the end, the ratings guys – including Evenpole – crossed the finish line together, but had to leave the stage win to Warren Bargel. The Frenchman from Arkéa-Samsic turned out to be the strongest in the first half, just ahead of Meurisse. In the standings, Poujacar remained in the lead by 9 seconds over the first pursuit, Evenpool. Tomorrow the Queen stage of this Tirreno in the list.
