Michael Smith has set out ‘Down Under’ with a clear purpose. In Australia and New Zealand, ‘Bullyboy’ was one of eight PDC representatives for three World Series matches.
Smith is currently second in the World Series Order of Merit. The Englishman will be looking to take over the number one spot from Dimitri van den Berg, who has been added to the line-up due to the cancellation of Peter Wright.
“It will be disappointing if I don’t come back with the title,” Smith told the PDC. “I want to win at least one match and go to the World Series Finals in Amsterdam on top.”
2022 has been Smith’s most successful year so far. He won three The Players Championship, one Euro Tour and the US Darts Masters in New York. On the other hand, he lost in the World Darts Championship and UK Open finals. Thus, the former youth world champion is still waiting for his first major title.
“I’m done not performing up to my potential. I no longer play for myself, I play for my children’s future. That’s why I get frustrated when I lose.”
In June, Smith won the US Darts Masters at New York’s iconic Madison Square Garden.
“It’s unreal. As a kid I used to watch TV and see pop stars and comedians performing there, and I never thought I’d be playing there. I didn’t want to lose my first game there. It then became my goal to become the first Tartar to win a tournament there. Fortunately, that dream came true. ”
