Before June 1, national coach Roberto Martinez must transfer his final selection for the European Championship to UEFA. Today however he has already announced his list of 26 names. It can still handle any injuries on the backup roll.
“That’s a very good thing and the only right decision,” says Eddie Snilders. “As George Likins’ assistant at the 1998 World Cup, I experienced what it was like to call up three extra boys.”
“Then there is a discussion in the group and it becomes difficult to be there. The press also plays it by asking questions about it.
“Now there is clarity at least: the 26 players going to the European Championship and the 11 players on the reserve list know that they will be thought of in the future. They are standing aside.”
The reserve list includes Kaminski, Sailymaker, Sambi Lukonga, Heinen, Phuket, Januzaj, Michel, Jordan Lukaku, Vanheusden, Vershatrin and De Ketelari. In this way, Martinez also gives a glimpse into the future of the Red Devils.
“The reserve team knows that, in principle, they will be the first to qualify for selection in the near future,” says Snilders. “Because after the European Championship, something will change with the national team.”
“Martinez is now sending a clear signal to the youth: They are a little short on the current selection, but if they continue to perform, they will definitely be called up in the future.”
