Spanish police are searching for an American woman (40 years old) after she disappeared under mysterious circumstances in Madrid outside

Spanish police are investigating the disturbing disappearance of a 40-year-old American. Ana Knezevic disappeared at the beginning of this month from the apartment where she lived in Madrid, in the elegant Salamanca neighborhood. There are some strange elements to the case that make her disappearance so mysterious and raise fears of the worst. For example, it turns out that someone had painted the cameras in the woman's apartment building black around the time of the disappearance. And Anna herself sent very strange letters to friends.

Police were alerted to the disappearance of Ana Knezevic (full name Ana María Knezevic Henao), after she failed to show up at the Madrid station on 5 February. There she would usually agree with a friend to take the train to Barcelona together. But she never achieved that.

On the same day, the 40-year-old American, originally from Colombia, was reported missing. From the information currently available to the police, it appears that Anna has been “disappearing” since at least 2 February. We are now twenty days later. Surveillance photos in the Spanish capital show a beautiful, cheerful, slender woman with long brown hair and brown eyes.

Strange messages

Anna's friends told US media that they last received WhatsApp messages from her on February 3, the day after she disappeared. Most of all, they say, they were very strange. “I met someone amazing!”, one could read. “He has a summer house two hours from Madrid. We're going there now and I'm going to spend a few days there. The signal is bad. I'll call you when I get back.” Another message indicates that the unknown man approached her in the street earlier that day. Anna talks about the “cool click.” “Something I've never experienced before.”

Friends find the messages suspicious. According to the media, they suddenly switched between English and Spanish, there were several hours between messages, and above all: the messages were full of terms and expressions that Ana's friends claim she never uses. Friends also say that it is not at all normal for Anna to go on a surprise trip with a strange man.

No answer

Sana Ramu, one of Anna's best friends, says that in response to the messages she asked Anna to forward her location. But Anna didn't answer anymore. Sana's message has not arrived yet. Anna's phone is off.

The cameras are down

In addition, Anna disappeared shortly after an unidentified man wearing a motorcycle helmet disabled the two cameras in the apartment complex where she was staying, by spraying the lenses with a spray can. The union told CNN that this relates to a camera at the entrance to the building located in Madrid's elegant Salamanca district, and another security camera directed towards the elevator. It is unclear whether the incident is related to the American's disappearance. But he sure is crazy.

According to CNN, the woman had been renting the apartment since January 5. The rent usually ends on February 5, but she booked another month – until March 5. The union said that police searched the apartment on February 12. They won't find anything right away.

“difficult divorce”

According to family and friends, Ana moved to Spain to recharge her batteries amid a “difficult” divorce with her husband, a 36-year-old Serb named David Knezevic. The two have been married for 13 years and usually live in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The couple seems to be having a good time. They are associated with three successful companies that provide technology and other supports to businesses in South Florida. There are a lot of financial assets and at least three properties.

Juan Henao, Ana's brother, told police on February 7 that “a large amount of assets were at stake to be divided.” The brother talked about a “contested divorce,” NBC News wrote based on police reports. Juan Henao also said that his brother-in-law “wasn't happy” with the whole situation between them.

So the American media points the finger, some more subtly than others, at Anna's husband as a possible suspect. David Knezevich's attorney, Ken Badowitz, strongly denied this week that David had anything to do with his wife's disappearance.

In Serbia

The lawyer told the AP on Tuesday that his client was in Serbia when his wife disappeared in Spain. He still resides there today, providing full cooperation to the Spanish police and the FBI. “David is cooperating with authorities,” Badowitz said. He has already spoken with investigators in Spain several times. He gave them credit card details, and also hired a Spanish lawyer who helped secure police entry into the apartment in Madrid… He's doing everything he can, from Serbia.

“A blatant lie”

Why wasn't the man flown to Spain? “He doesn't speak Spanish, he has no family or friends in Spain. He doesn't have a house or an apartment in Spain,” the lawyer said. “He can't do anything there.” The counselor also denies that the breakup between Anna and David was ugly. On the contrary, To him, it was all ‘amicable.’ “That their divorce is going to go so badly is a blatant lie.”

The search is well underway

Posters, TV reports and online alerts about the missing American have already reached millions of people, a Spanish volunteer group told US media. The Spanish police do not want to say much about this case. The Spaniards only say that “the investigation is ongoing” but have not revealed any further details, precisely because the investigation is still ongoing.
