The city of Ghent has redeveloped Steinaker and a number of surrounding streets. There are plenty of climate-smart interventions that ensure this A green, pleasant, safe and above all liveable neighbourhood: A clear signal for the future.

Space was needed to make this happen. Therefore, the city converted Steinaker Street from a two-way street to a one-way street within District 30. This created space for the creation of high-quality natural wetlands. Green ribbonin conjunction with A Safe path for walking and cycling From the university hospital.

Less pavement and more green

Each form of paving was carefully considered during the design process. During the reconstruction process, the city converted approximately 24% of the paved area to green (the share of green increased by 10%), which corresponds to 3,855 square meters of additional mitigation. To a large extent, this can be reduced to a continuous green strip 4.5 meters wide and more than 500 meters long at Steinaker, which acts as a valley. The city also planted 170 other trees in the streets.

Through this project, the city makes its climate adaptation policy concrete and clear.
