Deposed Bishop Joseph Strickland believes that the Pope’s reforms pursue a policy that “undermines the guarantees of faith.” The resignation was announced simultaneously by the Vatican and the US Conference of Bishops without any explanation.
It is rare for a bishop to be suddenly expelled. Bishops who are in conflict with the Vatican are usually removed from their positions quietly and with dignity. They first ask if they can request dismissal and after a while it is allowed. The Pope then accepts the resignation request.
