The Republican Party’s Power Struggle: Pressure Mounting on Trump critic Liz Cheney | abroad

In the power struggle between Republicans in the US House of Representatives, pressure is mounting on Liz Cheney, a critic of former President Donald Trump. Party leader in the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, told Fox News on Sunday that he supports Elise Stefanick, Cheney’s rival, to head the House Republican Congress.

Cheney asked on Wednesday Editorial in the Washington Post Her party members will clearly split from Trump. She called on them to move away from “Trump’s dangerous and anti-democratic sect.” As chair of the House Republican Convention, Cheney is the third most important female lawmaker in her group. Trump demands her removal.

Cheney is one of the 10 Republicans who voted, after Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol, with Democrats in early January to remove Trump from office. But the majority required in the Senate to convict Trump did not materialize.

Since Trump’s defeat by Democratic rival Joe Biden in the November election, a power struggle has raged in the Republican Party. On Wednesday, a vote may be taken among Republicans in the House of Representatives to decide Cheney’s future and her position.
