Van Gerwen survives a quick exit in Australia

Michael van Gerwen has come into the Queensland Darts Masters quarter-finals hanging and strangling. ‘Mighty Mike’ needed a decisive leg to beat local qualifier Bailey Marsh.

D Prabandher had a disappointing start to the triptych World Series in Australia and New Zealand. Van Gerwen averaged 86 and completed 27 percent.

It was only in the ninth leg that van Gerwen took the lead for the first time, having previously trailed 4-2. The newly-crowned World Matchplay Champion tied with a 72 finish and 17-darter before taking the lead with a 20-darter.

However, van Gerwen failed to complete it in five innings in the tenth leg after which Marsh leveled with a double 4. After being bowled out by the Netherlands in the deciding leg, Marsh still hoped for victory, but he couldn’t find a triple from 111. Van Gerwen then served his second match dart through double 10. Van Gerwen will play in Saturday’s quarter-final against Houbai Buha, who pulled off a surprise earlier in the day by eliminating Jonny Clayton.

Simon Whitlock was able to secure victory in front of his home crowd. The Australian, who won the World Cup of Darts alongside Damon Hedda for Australia in June, tackles James Wade (6-2).
