Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s WeChat account has disappeared. Australian politicians accuse China of interfering in the calculation. “What the Chinese government has done by closing the prime minister’s account is actually foreign interference in our democracy,” said Senator James Patterson, a Liberal Party member like Morrison.
It appears that Morrison’s account has been replaced by an account called “Chinese New Australian Life”. This name was registered in October of last year, but the account log will show that it is a Morrison account.
WeChat is the dominant messaging app in China. Morrison created the account in 2019 to facilitate communication with the Chinese community in Australia.
WeChat is owned by the Chinese technology company Tencent and is regularly monitored by the Chinese authorities.
