Chesterfield County authorities have not released the name of the 17-year-old who died while in custody at the Chesterfield County Detention Center last Friday night. According to Chesterfield County Sheriff Robert Lee, at this time, the death is believed to be a suicide.
“There are no apparent signs of foul play,” said Lee.
The investigation of the case is being handled by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED). As of Tuesday afternoon, the autopsy report had not been released, said Chesterfield County Deputy Coroner Calvin Cassidy.
The deceased was arrested Tuesday, Jan. 14, on charges of breaking and entering an automobile. According to Sgt. Daniel Scott, public information officer for the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office, the victim had identified the suspect. After questioning, an arrest warrant was issued by Judge John Davis.
The deceased was “out on bond from Marlboro County, with similar charges, at the time of the arrest,” said Scott.
