The British Beverage Vendors Association is concerned about the shortage of alcohol in stores during the festive period due to a shortage of truck drivers to supply it. According to the interest group, the government should do more to address the shortage of truck drivers in the UK.
The Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA) has written a letter to Secretary of Transportation Grant Shapps. According to the WSTA, the letter was signed by 49 beverage companies, including Moët Hennessy, Laurent-Perrier and Pernod Ricard. “There is a growing concern among our members that quick action must be taken or the supply chaos will only get worse,” the WSTA president said. He says there are already long delays, with costs rising, limiting supply to consumers.
The UK has been struggling for some time with a shortage of truck drivers, as a result, for example, filling stations could not be provided and stores had to deal with empty shelves. The British government has taken several measures, including work permits for thousands of foreign truck drivers. The government says it is not concerned about alcohol shortages during the holiday season.
